China Tourist Visa (L Visa)
Standard tourist visa for citizens not eligible for visa-free policies
The L Visa is the standard short-term visa for foreigners who wish to visit mainland China for tourism, sight-seeing, visiting friends or other private reasons. This visa is required for citizens who are not eligible for the 30-day unilateral visa-free policy or the 240-hour transit visa-free policy. Holders may travel freely in almost all provinces and cities, with the exception of closed or restricted areas that require additional permits (e.g., Tibet).

Mr. Carlos Ramírez from Mexico (not on the 30-day unilateral visa-free list and unable to arrange a qualifying third-country ticket for the 240-hour transit) wants to spend three weeks touring Beijing, Xi'an and Guilin. He applies for a single-entry L Visa at the Chinese Visa Application Service Centre (CVASC) in Mexico City. The visa is issued on 5 Aug 2025, valid for entry until 5 Nov 2025 and allows a maximum stay of 30 days after each entry.

Note: US citizens are eligible for 10-year multiple-entry L visas with 60-day stays per entry. This is part of a reciprocal agreement between China and the United States.
Apply in Advance
Apply at least 1 month before your planned travel date. Do not book non-refundable flights or hotels until your visa is approved.
Entry Validity
You must enter China before the "Enter Before" date on your visa. The duration of stay (e.g., 30 days) starts from the day you enter China.
Restricted Areas
Some areas like Tibet, Xinjiang border regions, and certain military zones require additional permits even with a valid L visa. Contact a local travel agency for Tibet permits.
Visa Extensions
If you need to stay longer, you can apply for a visa extension at the local Exit & Entry Administration office in China before your current visa expires.
You must apply at the Chinese Visa Application Service Centre (CVASC) or the Chinese Embassy/Consulate in your country of residence. You cannot apply from within China or from a third country unless you have legal residency there.
